Help with PDF tools
Common questions
Privacy and where your files go
No. The file you add is opened, changed and saved by code running in this browser tab, and is never sent to a server. Your browser does make other requests: for this site's own files, OCR language data, Google Fonts typefaces, and any web address you ask a tool to fetch. A typeface request can list the characters you typed in the Editor, never the document.
Because nothing is stored on a server, there is no link to send you. The result waits in your browser's memory until you click Download, which saves it to your device. Close the tab first and it is gone.
Recent files, saved signatures and images, the Editor's recovery copy and each tool's last-used options, all on this device. "Continue with" also leaves a short-lived hand-off record, deleted when the next tool reads it. On a shared computer, use a private window or clear this site's data before you leave.
File size, batches and file names
No limit is built in. The real limit is the memory your browser gives the tab: the whole file is read into memory, and most tools keep more than one copy while they work.
Yes, except in the Editor, Fill & Sign and OCR, which take one file at a time. More than one result arrives as a ZIP ("Download ZIP"). Merge, Organize and JPG to PDF with "Merge into one document" ticked make a single PDF instead.
Split, Extract Pages, PDF to JPG and Watermark have a "Result file names" section on the options sheet. Build a pattern from tokens such as [BASENAME], [FILENUMBER] and [TIMESTAMP], plus [CURRENTPAGE] in the first three and [TEXT] in Watermark, with a live example. Other tools name the result after the input.
Editing, filling and signing
Yes, in the Editor. Click a line of text and retype it. A PDF stores text as separate placed lines, so a longer replacement does not reflow the page, and a font that is not embedded is swapped for the closest match.
A scan is a picture of a page, so there are no characters to click. The Editor says "This page is an image. Use OCR to make its text editable." Run the file through OCR with "PDF (searchable)" ticked, then open the result in the Editor.
Open Fill & Sign, choose Sign, then New Signature. Type your name in one of twelve handwriting styles, draw it, add an image of your signature, or photograph it with your camera. Drag it into place, then click Apply changes and download.
This tool places an image of your signature on the page. It adds no certificate or cryptographic digital signature, and the signature dialog says it does not guarantee the signature is legally binding. Whether an image is enough depends on your country and document.
In Fill & Sign, choose Forms, then click a field: text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons and dropdowns can be filled. On a flat page with printed lines and no real fields, choose Text and click where each answer goes. Use Flatten afterwards to fix the answers in place.
Converting and scanned documents
It rebuilds text, headings, tables, bold and italic runs and links, so the result is editable, but it is a reconstruction, not a copy. Images are not carried over, and multi-column pages are read line by line, so expect to tidy the .docx. "Keep layout" stays closest to the pages.
Only PDF to Word can read a scan: when the first pages have no selectable text, it offers "Run OCR first". PDF to Text stops with a message, and PDF to Excel and PDF to PowerPoint read only the text layer, so run OCR first.
Accuracy depends on scan resolution, contrast and how straight the page is, and no OCR is perfect, so read the result. The Language menu offers about 80 languages, from Afrikaans to Yiddish. Each language's data downloads the first time you use it, a few megabytes, then your browser reuses it.
The site probably does not allow your browser to fetch it from another site, a rule called CORS. Save the page as an .html file with Ctrl or Cmd+S, then add it on the "Convert HTML files" tab. Pages behind a login cannot be fetched either.
Passwords and permissions
Yes in most tools. A PDF that needs a password shows "This file needs a password" on its file chip, and the tool button unlocks once you type it and see "Password OK". The Editor and Fill & Sign do not accept password-protected files yet, so remove the password first with Unlock.
The file has an owner password: it opens freely but restricts printing, copying or editing. Unlock removes those restrictions without asking for a password. Most tools that rewrite the PDF, such as Merge and Split, stop on these files, so run Unlock first and use its result.
Protect defaults to "Strong (AES 256 bits)", with two Medium options, AES 128 and RC4 128. You can set a Password to open the file, an Admin password for permissions, or both. Permission boxes are advisory, since many readers ignore them, and nothing here can recover a forgotten password.
Recent files, recovery and saved signatures
While a document is open in the Editor or Fill & Sign, Local saving keeps a copy in this browser two seconds after you stop making changes. Reopen either page to "Recover session" or "Discard". Only documents under 5 MB are kept, one at a time, and Apply changes clears the copy unless you tick "Keep a recovery copy after download".
In this browser's storage on this device, saved automatically when you add them in the Editor or Fill & Sign. Manage them on Saved assets: rename, delete, or export the library as a ZIP. It has a 200 MB soft cap, and the page warns you as it nears it.
A list, kept only in this browser, of the last 50 files you added to any tool. A local file under 5 MB keeps a copy, so "Open in" reopens it in the tool you used; larger files keep only their details.
Browsers, phones and tablets
Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. The site is built for ES2022 and needs Web Workers, IndexedDB and WebAssembly, so old browsers are not supported. Some features depend on the browser: TIFF images, the Share button and the signature camera.
Yes. The pages adapt to narrow screens, the Editor's toolbar collapses into a Tools menu, and touch works for placing, dragging and drawing. Zoom uses buttons, from 50% to 300%, with no pinch gesture. Phones have less memory, so big files fail more often.
No. There is no offline mode or installable app. The page loads over the network each visit, though your browser may cache it, and OCR downloads language data the first time you use a language.
When something goes wrong
Memory is the usual cause. Close other tabs and try again, or split the PDF into parts, run the tool on each, and merge the results if you need one file.
Use the form at the foot of this page. It opens your mail app with the message written out. Say which tool you used, what you expected and what happened, and roughly how large the file was. Do not attach a document you would not email.
Guides by task
Each entry says what to click and what you get. The tool page has the full detail.
Merge and organize
Merge PDF
Add PDFs and images, then drag files into order, or use Pages view to move single pages. "More options" adds a table of contents and sets bookmark and form field handling. The result ends in -merged.
Organize PDF pages
All pages from every file land in one grid. Drag to reorder, rotate, duplicate or remove pages, add a blank page, or tick "Reverse order", then click Save. The result ends in -organized.
Split and extract
Split PDF
Choose a method: every page, visually select split points, every X pages, or every even page. The options sheet counts the documents you will get. Several results arrive as a ZIP.
Extract PDF pages
Choose "Odd pages only", "Even pages only" or "Specific pages", then click thumbnails or type a range such as 2-5,9-11,14,18-. Each file becomes a new PDF of just those pages.
Edit, fill and sign
PDF editor
Text is selected when a PDF opens: click a line to retype it, or click empty space to add text. Images, Whiteout, Annotate and Shapes are in the toolbar. "Apply changes" builds a file ending in -edited.
Fill and sign PDF
Use Forms to fill existing fields and Text for flat pages, then Sign to type, draw, add or photograph a signature. Drag it into place and click "Apply changes".
Delete PDF pages
Each thumbnail has a Delete button, and Undo brings the page back. To remove many pages, type a range under the grid. You cannot delete every page of a file.
Compress and read scans
Compress PDF
Set "Image quality" (Medium, Good or Best) and "Image resolution" (72 to 720 ppi), then click "Compress PDF". Only images are re-encoded, and the result screen shows the size before and after.
OCR PDF
Choose a Language and an Output: "PDF (searchable)", "Text" or both. "Quick single page mode" reads one page instead of all. The first run for a language downloads its data.
Passwords, watermarks and flattening
Password protect PDF
Type a Password to open the file, an "Admin password to change permissions", or both. Encryption defaults to Strong (AES 256 bits). Permission boxes are advisory, because many readers ignore them.
Remove PDF password
Add the file, type its password on the file chip if asked, wait for "Password OK", then click "Unlock PDF". The result has no password and no permission limits.
Add watermark to PDF
Choose "Add Text", "Add Image" or "Templates", then set Opacity, Rotation and whether it sits centered or where you drag it. One line of text per line gives a separate copy each.
Flatten PDF
"Flatten everything" turns each page into an image at 75 to 220 dpi, so text can no longer be selected. "Flatten only form fields" keeps text selectable and bakes in filled values.
Convert from PDF
PDF to Word
Choose "Keep layout" or "Optimize for legibility", then click "Convert to Word". The .docx holds text, tables, bold, italic and links, but not images. On a scan, tick "Run OCR first".
PDF to Excel
Choose "Keep style and layout" or "Optimized for tables", then xlsx or csv, and one sheet per page or a single sheet. Tables are found from where text sits, and numbers become numeric cells.
PDF to PowerPoint
Nothing to set. Each page becomes a slide with the page as a background image and an editable text box over every line. Check dense pages in PowerPoint.
PDF to JPG
Every page is ticked to save; untick the ones you do not need. Choose "Image resolution" (75, 150 or 220 dpi) and "Image format" (JPG, PNG or TIFF). More than one page gives a ZIP.
Extract text from PDF
No options. Click "Extract text" for a .txt file per PDF, with pages separated by form feed characters. A scan has no text layer, so the tool stops and tells you to run OCR first.
Convert to PDF
Word to PDF
Add .docx files and click "Convert to PDF". Pages are A4 with 1 inch margins whatever the Word page size. A .doc file is refused until you save it as .docx.
JPG to PDF
Add images, drag them into order and rotate any that are sideways. Choose a page size (A4 by default, or "Fit to image") and margin. Untick "Merge into one document" for one PDF per image.
HTML to PDF
Pick a tab: "Convert URL to PDF", "Convert HTML files" or "HTML code". "More options" sets page size, margins, viewport width and a delay. The PDF is an image of the page; links stay clickable.
Page layout
Rotate PDF pages
Select pages with All, Odd pages, Even pages or a click, then use "Rotate left" or "Rotate right". With nothing selected, the buttons turn every page. "Reset selection" clears your turns.
Crop PDF
Choose one crop box for every page, trim each page to its own edges, or set the area yourself by dragging edges or typing margins in inches. The outside area is hidden, not deleted.
Resize PDF pages
Choose "Add margins and padding" or "Change page size" (ten standard sizes or a custom one). Apply it to all pages or only those you select. Content is scaled to fit, never stretched.
Add page numbers to PDF
Set the Style ("Page 1", "1 of N" and others) and "Location on page". The default is header center in Times New Roman at size 10, so choose a footer if you want one.
Add header and footer to PDF
Type the text under Customize, pick a location and, optionally, a numbering style. It repeats on every page, or only on pages you list under "More options". There is no automatic date field.
Technical limits
Where a limit is not listed here, none is built in.
| Area | What applies |
|---|---|
| File size | No limit is built in. The whole file is held in memory, often more than once, so your device's memory is the limit. |
| Files per task | No count is enforced. The Editor, Fill & Sign and OCR take one file; other tools take several. |
| Files accepted | PDF in most tools; Merge also takes images. JPG to PDF takes PNG, GIF, JPG, TIFF, BMP and WebP (TIFF depends on your browser). Word to PDF converts .docx only. HTML to PDF takes .html files, web addresses or pasted code. |
| Files produced | .docx, .xlsx or .csv, .pptx, .txt, or JPG, PNG or TIFF images, from PDF to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Text and JPG. OCR gives a searchable PDF, text, or both. |
| Password-protected PDFs | Type the password on the file chip. The Editor and Fill & Sign do not accept them yet. Owner-password files need Unlock first in most tools. |
| OCR | About 80 languages, read at 200 dpi. Each language downloads a few megabytes on first use. |
| HTML to PDF | Web addresses must allow cross-origin fetching. Scripts do not run. Viewport width is 320 to 2560 px, delay 0 to 10 seconds. |
| Editor and Fill & Sign | Zoom is 50% to 300%. The Editor keeps 200 undo steps. |
| Kept in this browser | A recovery copy: documents under 5 MB, one at a time. Recent files: the last 50, with a copy for local files under 5 MB. Saved assets: a 200 MB soft cap, with a warning above 80% and no block. |
| Not supported | Certificate-based digital signatures, editing scanned text without OCR, legacy .doc files, and Word images other than PNG or JPEG. |
