About Merge

Merge PDF files in your browser, along with any images, into one document in the order you set. The pages are read and joined by code running in this tab and are never sent to a server. Reach for it when a signed contract, a cover sheet and a report need to travel as a single file, or two halves of a scan landed in separate uploads.

Reordering, a table of contents and bookmark handling all live here. The tool copies pages as they are, so it will not shrink an oversized source file for you. Use Compress for that.

How it works

  1. Add the PDFs and images you want to combine. PNG, GIF, JPG, TIFF, BMP and WebP images are accepted, and each one becomes its own one-page document automatically.
  2. In Files view, drag files into order, use the arrows on each file, or sort with Sort A-Z or Sort Z-A. Switch to Pages view to reorder, rotate, remove or duplicate individual pages instead.
  3. Use Add pages if you only need a handful of pages from another file, not the whole thing.
  4. Open More options for double-sided printing, same-size pages, a cover page, a filename footer, bookmark handling, a table of contents and what to do with form fields.
  5. Click Merge PDF files and download the combined document, named after the first file in the Files list with -merged added, such as contract-merged.pdf.

What ends up in the merged file

Pages are copied into a new document, in the order shown, as PDF objects. Text stays text and images keep their resolution. Because the result starts as a blank document, properties such as title and author are not carried across, and the merged file has no password even if a source had one. Add one afterwards with Protect.

Bookmarks follow the setting under More options, Bookmarks: Keep all lists every source bookmark in file order, One entry per file swaps them for one bookmark per file, Keep all, nested under one entry per file does both, and Discard all removes the outline. A bookmark that points at a removed page, or uses a named destination instead of a page, is left out.

Form fields have four settings.

  • Merge (Rename existing), the default: fields keep working, and a name already taken by an earlier file becomes Name_2.
  • Merge: fields keep working under their original names.
  • Flatten: typed values are baked into the page and the fields are gone.
  • Discard: the fields are removed.

Options for printing and navigation

Double sided printing adds a blank page after any file with an odd page count, so the next file starts on a fresh sheet when printed on both sides. The blank matches that file's last page. Treat the first document as a cover page exempts the first file from that padding and from the table of contents.

Make all pages same size fits each page inside the first page's dimensions, centred and in proportion, so a landscape page gets margins rather than being stretched. Add filename to page footer prints each file's name, extension included, in small grey type at the foot of its pages.

Table of contents adds one page at the front with a line and a clickable link for each file. Based on file names drops the extension. Based on document titles uses the title stored in each PDF and falls back to the file name, which is always the case for images. It is a single page, so the type shrinks, down to 6 point, to fit. It is inserted last, after any blank pages, and moves everything after it down by one page, so with Double sided printing each file then starts on the back of a sheet rather than the front.

A worked example

Say lease.pdf has 12 pages, addendum.pdf has 5 and photos.jpg is one image. Add all three, drag addendum.pdf above photos.jpg, turn on Double sided printing and set Bookmarks to One entry per file. The lease is even, so it gets no padding; the addendum and the photo are odd, so each gets a blank page after it. You download lease-merged.pdf with 12 + 6 + 2 = 20 pages and three bookmarks, one per file.

Things that catch people out

Three behaviours are easy to miss.

  • The order you set in Pages view counts only if Pages view is still selected when you click Merge PDF files. Switching back to Files view merges whole files in file order.
  • Add pages copies your chosen pages into a new file named like report (selected pages).pdf, which appears in the file list. Bookmarks from the original do not follow those pages.
  • Pages view builds its page list when a file is added, so for a password-protected file, remove the password with Unlock first if you want to arrange its individual pages.
