About Rotate

Rotate PDF pages turns pages 90 degrees at a time, on any page you select, and writes that rotation into the file itself. Reach for it when a scan came in sideways or upside down and every viewer, not just the one open right now, needs to show it the right way up.

It changes only a page's stored orientation. Nothing on the page is redrawn, so text stays sharp and selectable.

How it works

  1. Add one or more PDFs. Every page of every file appears as a thumbnail in one grid.
  2. Pick which pages to rotate: click All, Odd pages or Even pages for a quick set, click pages individually, or leave nothing selected to rotate every page.
  3. Click Rotate left or Rotate right, or use the small arrows on a single page in the grid. Each click is a quarter turn, and the thumbnails turn as you click, so you can check the result before anything is saved.
  4. Click Reset selection if you want to clear your rotations and start over.
  5. Click Rotate PDF and download your result. Several files come back together in a ZIP.

What is written into the file, and what is not

Every PDF page carries a rotation value that a viewer applies when it draws the page: 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees clockwise. Rotate PDF pages adds your quarter turns to the value a page already has and saves the total. A page that arrived turned 90 degrees and gets one click of Rotate right is saved at 180.

The content of the page is left as it is. Text, images and fonts are not redrawn or recompressed, and pages you did not turn are saved with the rotation they came in with. Turns come in quarter steps only. There is no way to enter an angle such as 3 degrees, so a scan that was fed in slightly crooked stays crooked.

A worked example: a duplex scan with every other page upside down

Say a 24-page contract went through a double-sided scanner and every even page came out upside down. Add the file, click Even pages, then click Rotate right twice. Two quarter turns make a half turn, so pages 2, 4, 6 and on up to 24 flip over in the grid while the odd pages stay as they are. When every thumbnail reads the right way up, click Rotate PDF and download the file.

If you overshoot, Rotate left on the same selection takes a turn back, because the turns are added together. Reset selection clears both the selection and every turn you have made, which puts the grid back to the file as it arrived.

Things worth knowing before you click

Rotation is cumulative for each page, and every click applies to whichever pages are selected at that moment.

  • With nothing selected, Rotate left and Rotate right turn every page of every file you have added.
  • The small arrows on a thumbnail turn only that page, whatever else is selected.
  • Files added together share one grid. Odd pages and Even pages count through all of them as one long run, so a file with an odd number of pages shifts the pattern for the file after it.
  • Each file is saved as its own PDF under its original name. Two or more come back in one ZIP.
  • A PDF that needs a password shows a password box beside its name, and Rotate PDF stays disabled until the password is accepted.
  • The tool sets no cap on page count or file size. How large a file you can handle depends on the memory your browser has to work with.

When a different tool fits better

Rotate PDF pages changes orientation and nothing else, and it does not guess which pages are wrong. You judge that from the thumbnails. If you also need to move pages into a new order, delete some, or pull pages from several files into one document, Organize can rotate pages too and saves a single combined result.

If the pages are the right way up but the wrong size, or have too much white border, Resize and Crop are the tools for that.
